What is the best way to express the feeling everyone felt at our first awards ceremony? Well, below is an independent review by one of the number one UK radio stations Major fm ;.
MajorFm.com were proud to witness the first ever UMA’s. It's high time underground music is given more recognition and publicity, and these awards did just that, aiming to recognise the impact of dance, urban and alternative music culture worldwide and to celebrate the achievements of all the people that work hard within the scene, such as DJ's, artists, clubs and record labels.
The awards were presented in conjunction with the Warchild charity, as well as being sponsored by Mecca Clothing, UKPCDJ, Diffusion PR, Pure Garage, Invincible Mag, CryBaby Media, Eden , UKMusicWorldwide.com, Contacts magazine, Aerosoul Clothing and the Hard Rock Café.
It was a well-organised affair, especially considering it had never been done before. The public turnout was a little bit on the sparse side probably due to lack of promotion, meaning the after party wasn't really bangin', but it was a memorable, worthwhile night all the same.
The awards were presented by MC/DJ/Presenter Normski and model Catherine McQueen. It looked like it was hard work as there was a lot of waiting around for winners to make it to the stage, but Normski showed his strength by clowning around and ad-libbing, which can't have been easy as the crowd were hardly lively!
There were many guest presenters and some very good live performances, including Dizzee Rascal who really wow-ed the crowd, performing with award in hand, DT, Sharky P, DJ Butterfly & Zena (aka Just 4 Jokes) who performed their wicked new single and Sticky & the Surgery who performed a high-energy medley of their most well known tracks on Social Circles (best of which being in my book 'More Weed'). However the act that stole the show and really woke-up the crowd was human beat box Shlomo. An extremely talented white guy from Leeds who can make all manner of noises and music styles (the best by far being his Drum & Bass). He treated us to a first ever performance of his newly found ability to make a drum noise at the same time as a scratch….
The award ceremony moved along swiftly, at times it was hard to keep up! The highlights were some really great moments for our urban scene. Most importantly, Heartless Crew finally winning an award – about time!! The guys have been working so hard in the scene for so long it was so good to see them finally being recognised. It was very unfortunate that the Sidewinder NSC Awards didn’t have an award for UKG Crew as they would have won it, that’s for sure. But anyway, good things eventually come to those who wait.
Other great achievements for the UKG camp were awards for Sticky, Jaimeson, Femme Fatale (best birthday surprise she could have wished for!), Soul II Soul Recordings and Smoov @ Ministryof Sound (proving it is possible to have a long-running and safe UKG night in London , with all the big DJ's. Big respect to Michelle for making it happen). Who says UKG is dead??!?
The awards drew to a close with the Lifetime Achievement and Outstanding Contribution to the Underground Music Scene awards being presented to Goldie by none other than David Bellamy (who if you don't know is such a cool guy that used to present wildlife programs back in the day in an individual and enthusiastic style). Seriously, the guy must be about 70 now but his mad antics and jumping around on the stage with Normski had me in fits of giggles. Unfortunately Goldie had to leave early due to some family issues, so he wasn't around to collect the award – but we did manage to get an interview with him before he left.
