The Urban Music Awards was born out of the need to build a worldwide and independent awards ceremony to recognise the achievement of British based artists, producers, club nights, dj’s , radio stations, record labels and artist that are or were previously underground and are a product of the current UK Underground Dance/Urban music scene. All categories except 2 categories are nominated and voted for by the public. An estimated 3.5 million viewers and listeners tuned in to the 2004 Urban Music Awards . The 2005 Awards ceremony would be broadcast on Channel U and Invincible TV would broadcast the awards ceremony worldwide via their online channel and to thousands of viewers via Invincible TV Jamaica Cable channel broadcasting from Ochos Rios to Montego Bay , Kingston , Negrill and the rest of Jamaica ).

A few UMA facts:

-In 2003 Actor/DJ/Entrepreneur ‘Goldie’ was the first to receive the ‘UMA Lifetime Achievement Award’ whilst Dizzee Rascal was first to receive the ‘Most Inspiring Act 2003’. On winning the award Dizzee said “I’m taking this for all the kids who sit at home and make beats on playstations and fruity loops and never believe they’ll make it, believe in yourself . It is all about the UK ’.

-In 2004 British born soul songstress ‘Beverley Knight’ was awarded ‘Lifetime Achievement’ . She said “I would like to thank the UMA team and every single person who voted for me because in my years I have been in this industry. I haven’t ever felt this proud”.

-In the 2004 awards ceremony Victor from Big Brother 2004 and Ex Eastender and UMA presenter got into a comic moment on stage which was covered ‘line for line’ on Sunday People Newspaper.

- Jordan Kensington is the CEO and Founder of the Urban Music Awards UK Ltd and Invincible Media Group of events which include ; British Music Week, Underground Music Awards, World Fashion Awards, U-Music Live (France) and the Online Music Awards. Jordan says “In life one has to remain humble and put your heart into everything. If you use this, armed with hardwork and self-belief. You will succeed in creating your destiny”

-To date the UMA’s has featured on major press, like Rise TV (Channel 4), BBC Newsround, CD:UK, Channel U, Five News, London Tonight, New Nation, The Voice, Kiss TV, Kiss 100fm, BBC Online , Radio 1, Evening Standard, The Independent , Choice fm, The Metro Newspaper and many more.

-The 2003 UMA’s was in support of the War Child Charity whilst the 2004 awards ceremony gave 20% of ticket sales and raised awareness for ‘The End Child Exploitation Campaign’ launched by Unicef.

- There is now a French version of the UMA supporting 100% French Urban/Underground acts, and

-75,000 copies of the official UMA magazine are distributed to multiple and independent music stores, student unions, clubs and selected retail outlets throughout the UK & Ireland . Advertisers included : Warner Records, Virgin Records, BMG, TVT Records, LFB, Alter-ego Records, XL Recordings, Jet Star and much more
